Why letters, not postcards for Tree Service companies?
I have personally originated hundreds of direct mail campaigns resulting in the mailing of millions of direct mail pieces, mostly post cards.
In 2019 a valued tree service client for whom I had mailed post cards for years approached me with a very simple letter, told me it had been working for another tree company he knew of, and asked if we mailed marketing letters.
I responded that we do not mail anything that unsophisticated as we take pride in the beautiful, eye-catching post cards which have helped our clients grow their businesses for years. He asked me to develop a letter and give it a try. I responded that I would, but only if we did multiple mailings with 50% letters/50% post cards to the same geography so that an accurate comparison of total response and ROI could be made.
To my surprise, the letter outperformed the post card on each of the multiple mailings we did. Thus, I began primarily mailing letters for my tree companies and still do with excellent results.
Almost every year since 2019, I've had a new client or an established customer request that post cards be mailed to determine if their response rate had improved surpassing that of letters. The experiment described above has often been repeated. The letters still outperform post cards every time!
Tree service companies are the only businesses I've served where response to letters is consistently greater than it is to post cards.
